Our seventh-graders took on an inspiring challenge

Our seventh-graders took on an inspiring challenge: drawing like the legendary Michelangelo! Instead of painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling, they recreated one of his iconic masterpieces with paper taped to the undersides of their desks. 🎨 The result? Stunning works of art that reflect both creativity and dedication!

In grade seven, students dive into the fascinating world of the Renaissance, exploring its culture, daily life, and political hierarchies. This rich exploration weaves together art, science, and history 📚, providing a comprehensive look at one of history’s most transformative periods.

Dynamic, hands-on learning experiences like this keep students engaged, curious, and excited to discover more. It’s how we cultivate a lifelong passion for learning and exploration! 🌟

Our Saturday Parent-Child class is an enriching experience for parents and children (ages 0–3). Together, you’ll engage in meaningful activities that foster connection, curiosity, and creativity.

⭐️Did you know⭐️ In Waldorf education, preparation for literacy begins long before a child opens a book? 📚

Literacy is introduced to Waldorf students in a developmentally appropriate way in order to foster a lifelong love of reading. 📗

Students build upon the foundational skills they develop in early childhood education to support literacy skills in later grades.

👉For example, Waldorf educators take care to develop students’ gross motor function and regularly engage in cross-lateral movement - movement that allows students to build and strengthen the connection between the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

💬Why is that important for literacy? Bilateral brain integration is critical for whole-word recognition and decoding words, two essential reading skills.

Once students have reached the developmental milestones necessary to support literacy, students then learn to decode - the traditional phonetic approach to reading - in second grade. ⭐️✏️📖

“Literacy development in Waldorf schools cultivates awareness, appreciation, and skill in both the spoken and written word, following a developmentally sound approach that helps to ensure that students claim a love of literature, language, and writing as part of their birthright,” writes Dianne McGaunn’s and Kat Marsh in their research article, “How Reading, Writing, Literature, and Language are Taught in a Waldorf School.”

“In essence, the Waldorf approach to literacy is purposefully patient and thoughtfully builds a foundation for a life-long love of literacy, in its many forms.”

✨Join us as we celebrate the Year of the Snake with this unique cultural event for children and their families! 🐍✨

SWS will host this exciting Lunar New Year Celebration at Barnes & Noble in Lancaster on Wednesday, January 29th, from 4 to 6 pm.

Immerse yourself in the festivities with captivating lion dances, engaging Chinese New Year stories and crafts, topped off with the excitement of celebratory “firecrackers” (a.k.a. loud bubble wrap).

⭐️Year Story Time: 4:00 & 5:00 pm Chinese
⭐️New Year Crafts: 4:00 - 6:00 pm

✨ In our 7th grade Practical Arts class, creativity and craftsmanship come to life as students explore the beauty of handmade wood and pottery! 🪵✨

This week, they’ve been busy crafting elegant wooden candle holders and bowls, honing their skills in carving, sanding, and shaping. The tactile experience of working with wood is helping them develop both patience and precision. Meanwhile, their pottery projects are taking shape, as they learn the art of shaping clay and embracing the organic forms it naturally creates.

Every piece is a unique expression of each student’s growing craftsmanship, patience, and creativity. 🌟 We can’t wait to see how these beautiful works of art turn out!
